Trainee Train Assistant

Position Purpose
Assist the Transnet Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of all types of trains/locomotives (airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger) to ensure the customer’s freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition, on time, and to satisfy customer needs.
Position Outputs
- Sign on Duty
- Report to the designated workplace.
- Determine which locomotive to prepare.
- Obtain and place equipment on the locomotive.
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
- Clean the working area.
- Assist with locomotive start-up and brake tests.
- Couple locomotives and dispatch them.
- Prepare Locomotives
- Perform locomotive preparation as assigned.
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
- Clean working areas and assist with locomotive brake tests.
- Prepare Communication Equipment
- Obtain and check radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, or telemeters.
- Ensure communication equipment is functional.
- Pre-Trip Preparation
- Prepare the locomotive and train for departure, ensuring roadworthiness and compliance with safety standards.
- Attach/detach vehicles, mount telemeters, complete vehicle lists, and perform brake tests.
- Shunting Activities
- Perform shunting operations according to directives.
- Update vehicle lists and handle load/empty trucks in sidings.
- Enroute Assistance
- Assist the Train Driver to ensure the safe and timely movement of the train.
- Monitor train operations, compare signal positions, and protect the train during incidents or emergencies.
- Safety Compliance
- Adhere to safety standards and instructions to ensure motivation and competency.
- Feedback and Reporting
- Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding incidents or route deviations.
- Administrative Duties
- Assist with administrative tasks and complete the Train Journal for submission to the Section Manager.
- Shift Sign-Off
- Submit documentation after each shift to ensure accurate salary processing.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements
- Must undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments.
- Physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness (verified through medical tests).
- Must be at least 21 years old (per SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8).
Trainee Pre-Requisite
- Minimum height: 1.6m.
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System).
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
Functional Training
- Willing to undergo theoretical and practical training for Train Assistant duties.
- Obtain a Train Assistant certification to work independently.
