Position Purpose
Assist the Train Driver in safely and efficiently handling various types of trains (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passenger) to ensure timely and secure delivery of freight/cargo.
Position Outputs
- Sign On Duty
- Prepare assigned locomotive, place equipment, perform brake tests, and despatch locomotive.
- Prepare Locomotives
- Clean the work area, place equipment, and assist with starting and testing brakes.
- Prepare Communication Equipment
- Obtain and check communication devices (e.g., radios, handsets, telemeters).
- Pre-Trip Preparation
- Conduct pre-trip inspections, attach/detach vehicles, and perform brake tests with the Train Driver.
- Execute Shunting Activities
- Perform shunting, place/remove trucks, and update vehicle lists.
- Enroute Assistance
- Ensure safe movement, monitor signals, assist during emergencies, and protect the train.
- Safety Compliance
- Follow safety standards and provide timely feedback to the Train Driver.
- Administration
- Complete the train journal and submit it to the Section Manager after each shift.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Other Requirements:
- Must undergo medical surveillance and behavioral risk assessments.
- Must meet physical, hearing, vision, and fitness standards.
- Minimum age requirement: 21 years.
- Minimum height: 1.6m.
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Must complete Train Assistant training and obtain certification.

Knowledge:
- Communication systems, depot layout, locomotive equipment, train working rules, yard/siding layout, TFR policies, shunting procedures, Health and Safety Act, First Aid, BCEA, and policies on substance abuse.
Skills:
- Locomotive coupling, preparation, observation, shunting, train handling, time management, communication, judgement, and problem-solving.
Attributes:
- Stress handling, self-management, safety awareness, punctuality, willingness to work shifts, and results-oriented.
